Summer Teacher Feature
What you learned at your workshop:
This summer I was privileged to attend a professional development workshop called the “Band Director Academy” held at the Jazz Lincoln Center facility in the Columbus Circle area of New York City. The workshop was intended to give Middle and High School Band Directors a chance to improve their “teaching toolkit” in teaching Jazz Band by using information from the jazz tradition to inform the present. This year’s theme was on using the Count Basie Band to create present day teaching tools”.
How you will implement what you’ve learned:
- Bell Work: Using melodic excerpts from saxophonist Lester Young’s improvised solos as warm up exercises at the beginning of class
- Modeling: Using excerpts from the Basie Band repertoire to teach swing rhythms
- Modeling: Teaching big band rhythm guitar using the model of Freddie Green’s playing as an exemplar.
